Pride in Portsmouth: Celebration, Community & Carers

TACT’s Christina and Debbie talk about attending Portsmouth Pride, and the importance of highlighting ‘visibility, equality, and liberation’.

We began our day at the start of the vibrant parade along Southsea seafront, joining 3,000 fellow volunteers, organisations, and charities. The energy was electric — a sea of colour, music, and smiling faces surrounded us as we proudly marched the mile-long route to Southsea Common.

Throughout the parade, I handed out our TACT Pride stickers and spoke to dozens of people — every interaction met with genuine warmth and joy. Inclusivity and diversity were not just present; they were tangible. Despite the unpredictable British summer weather, thousands turned out to celebrate, support, and stand in solidarity.

“Pride is more than a party — it carries powerful political significance. Among the glitter and music were very real reminders of why Pride must continue: to protect the rights, dignity, and safety of the LGBTQ+ community.”

One of the most unforgettable moments was the thunderous presence of the 300-strong Batala drummers. Their rhythmic energy set a powerful and uplifting tone, with everyone dancing, cheering, and embracing the spirit of Pride. It was especially meaningful to experience all this in my home city of Portsmouth — a true celebration of community pride.

But Pride is more than a party — it carries powerful political significance. Among the glitter and music were very real reminders of why Pride must continue: to protect the rights, dignity, and safety of the LGBTQ+ community. As an ally, I stand firmly behind Pride’s mission to promote visibility, equality, and liberation.

I was proud to attend alongside Debbie, an engagement practitioner for London and the South East, as well as my daughter, family, and friends. Together, we spoke with many people about the importance of inclusion in fostering — especially the vital role the LGBTQ+ community can play. At our buzzing TACT stand, we shared resources, busted myths, and had rich conversations about fostering, from those simply curious to those considering becoming carers.

The day was not just an incredible celebration — it was a powerful platform for promoting TACT’s mission and values. We proudly highlighted our commitment to inclusivity, connection, and care, and reinforced our message: fostering is for everyone. Pride Month serves as a strong reminder of the ongoing need for a diverse network of foster carers — especially LGBTQ+ carers who can create inclusive, supportive homes for children in need.
