Fostering in RCT (Rhondda Cynon Taf)
Children and young people in RCT (Rhondda Cynon Taf) enter care for many different reasons, such as family breakdown or illness. However, the most common cause is neglect or abuse. TACT is currently seeking foster carers in RCT who can offer these young people the support, stability, and guidance they need to begin the healing from past trauma.
You don’t need prior experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer in RCT, as comprehensive training is provided. To begin the application process, all you need is at least one spare bedroom, a compassionate and nurturing nature, and the energy to provide a safe, loving home for a child. If this sounds like something you could do, you could become part of our Fostering RCT team.

Can I foster in RCT (Rhondda Cynon Taf)?
No previous experience is required to start fostering in RCT. We offer thorough initial training, continuous learning opportunities, and round-the-clock support from the moment you begin.
To start your fostering journey, you’ll need to meet these basic requirements:
- Be aged 21 or over (there’s no upper age limit)
- Have at least one spare bedroom in your home
- Be a full-time UK resident or have indefinite leave to remain
- Have the time and flexibility to commit to fostering
- Have good written and spoken English, as you’ll work closely with professionals and will keep written records about the children or young people in your care

Full Training
You don’t need previous experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer.
We provide comprehensive training to help you feel confident and prepared to welcome children into your home, with learning both online and in person.
As part of the assessment process, you’ll complete an introductory course called Skills to Foster. This short online course provides an overview of fostering and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Once you are approved as a foster carer with TACT, you’ll have access to a wide range of ongoing training designed to support your development. This helps you strengthen your skills and enhance the care and support you provide to children and young people in RCT and the surrounding areas.
We also offer specialist courses that provide the knowledge and practical tools needed to support children with specific needs or experiences, ensuring you feel supported throughout every stage of your fostering journey.
24/7 Support
At TACT, we understand how important it is for foster carers to have support whenever they need it. That’s why we continually invest in our services, ensuring every TACT fostering family has access to guidance and assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Once you are approved as a TACT foster carer, you will be supported by a dedicated Supervising Social Worker. Because our social workers manage smaller caseloads, they are able to provide more personalised and consistent support – helping you make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of children and young people.
This is what we provide:
- Full 24/7 support. Your Supervising Social Worker will be your main point of contact, and our out-of-hours service means help and guidance are always available whenever you need it.
- Foster carer portal. An online hub that gives you easy access to key information, training, guidance, and resources to support you in your day-to-day fostering role.
- Education service. A dedicated team focused on ensuring the children in your care receive the best possible educational support.
- Health service. Ongoing monitoring of the mental well-being of the children in your care.
- Support groups. Local support groups in RCT and the surrounding areas provide opportunities to connect with other carers, share experiences, and build a supportive community where advice and knowledge can be exchanged.
- Support for young people. Our Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners offer extra support and organise activities and events for the children in your care in RCT.
- Supporting your own children. We recognise the important role your own children play in the fostering journey. Our Children Who Foster events give them the chance to meet and connect with other young people from fostering families.
- Peer support. Where available, experienced TACT foster carers provide peer-to-peer support, offering practical advice and guidance to new carers.
Pay & Allowances
At TACT, we recognise foster carers as skilled professionals, and our fees and allowances are designed to reflect the crucial role they play in children’s lives.
In partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, we receive funding to provide well-matched, nurturing homes for children and young people. This support enables us to deliver high-quality services while ensuring our foster carers have the financial stability and wellbeing needed to focus fully on the children in their care.
Your fostering allowance will be determined by factors such as the type of care you provide, the number and ages of the children placed with you, and the complexity of their individual needs.
In addition to your weekly allowance, you’ll receive extra payments to mark birthdays, holidays, and religious celebrations. We also offer long service awards and a Refer a Friend bonus when someone you recommend becomes an approved TACT foster carer.
Below, you’ll find examples of the weekly Fostering RCT payments you could receive when a young person is placed in your care:

Meet The Area Manager
“I am immensely proud of being part of our highly experienced team of staff and foster carers, and to have met so many wonderful children and young people over the years. My team and I are passionate about achieving the best outcomes for our children and are a hundred percent behind our carers in enabling them to provide the best possible environment in which our children can flourish and emerge into health and happy young adults.”
Mike Anthony – TACT Area Manager Wales
What Our Foster Carers Say
“I have been so impressed with the support we have received from TACT. We have been given so much material in the form of therapeutic parenting and children’s books. TACT supported us with purchasing some items we needed to care for the younger child. The training offered is easy to access and of a high standard ensuring that, as a foster carer, I remain up to date and professional. I feel that TACT is very child focused but also supports foster carers.”
Beth and Steve – TACT Foster Carers since 2022
Partnership With The Baxter Project

Since 2023, TACT has partnered with The Baxter Project, an organisation that delivers animal-assisted early intervention programmes for young people. This collaboration has been instrumental in supporting the children and young people in TACT’s care.
Their practitioner-led therapeutic sessions use trained dogs to help young people feel more comfortable and express themselves more freely. By tapping into the natural bond between children and animals, this approach can be particularly effective in situations where traditional wellbeing methods may be less successful.
“The Baxter Project was introduced to us when ‘S’ was in High School and struggling very much with the work and school life generally. She really loved walking Baxter and enjoyed spending time with the Support Worker. We can only speak really highly of the Baxter Project.” Paul & Aly, TACT foster carers since 2014.
