Fostering in NEath
Children and young people in Neath come into care for a variety of reasons, including family breakdowns or illness. However, the most common reason is experiencing neglect or abuse. TACT is looking for foster carers in Neath to provide these young people with the care and guidance they need to recover from past trauma.
You don’t need previous experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer in Neath, as full training will be provided. To start the application process, all you need is at least one spare bedroom, a caring and nurturing nature, and plenty of energy to offer a child a safe and loving home. If this sounds like something you could do, you can join our Fostering Neath Team!

To start your fostering journey, you’ll need to meet these basic requirements:
- Be aged 21 or over (there’s no upper age limit)
- Have at least one spare bedroom in your home
- Be a full-time UK resident or have indefinite leave to remain
- Have the time and flexibility to commit to fostering
- Have good written and spoken English, as you’ll work closely with professionals and will keep written records about the children or young people in your care

Full Training
You don’t need any prior experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer.
We provide comprehensive training to help you feel confident and prepared to welcome children into your home, with sessions both online and in person.
As part of the assessment process, you’ll complete an introductory course called Skills to Foster. This short online course offers an overview of fostering and gives you the chance to ask any questions you may have.
Once approved as a foster carer with TACT, you’ll have access to a wide-ranging programme of ongoing training to support your continued development. This helps you build your skills and enhance the care and support you can provide to children and young people in Neath and the surrounding areas.
We also offer specialist courses that provide the knowledge and practical tools needed to care for children with specific needs or circumstances, ensuring you feel supported at every stage of your fostering journey.
24/7 Support
At TACT, we know how important it is for foster carers to have support whenever they need it. That’s why we continually invest in our services, ensuring every TACT fostering family has access to guidance and assistance 24/7.
Once you’re approved as a TACT foster carer, you’ll be assigned a dedicated Supervising Social Worker. With smaller caseloads, our social workers can provide more personalised and consistent support – helping you make a lasting and meaningful impact on the lives of children and young people.
This is what we provide:
- Full 24/7 support. Your Supervising Social Worker will be your main point of contact, and our out-of-hours service ensures support and guidance are always available whenever you need it.
- Foster carer portal. An online hub providing easy access to essential information, training, guidance, and resources to support you in your daily fostering role.
- Education service. A specialised team committed to ensuring the children in your care receive the highest quality education and support.
- Health service. Ongoing monitoring of the mental well-being of the children in your care.
- Support groups. Local support groups in Neath and surrounding areas offer a space to connect with other carers, share experiences, and build a supportive community for exchanging advice and knowledge.
- Support for young people. Our Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners provide additional support and coordinate activities and events for the children in your care in Neath.
- Supporting your own children. We recognise the important role your own children play in the fostering journey. Our Children Who Foster events allow them to meet and connect with other young people from fostering families.
- Peer support. Where available, experienced TACT foster carers provide peer-to-peer support, offering practical advice and guidance to new carers.
Pay & Allowances
At TACT, we recognise foster carers as skilled professionals, and our fees and allowances are structured to reflect the vital role they play in children’s lives.
Working in partnership with Neath Port Talbot Council, we receive funding to provide well-matched, nurturing homes for children and young people. This support allows us to deliver high-quality services while ensuring our foster carers have the financial stability and wellbeing to focus fully on the children in their care.
Your fostering allowance will depend on factors such as the type of care you provide, the number and ages of the children placed with you, and the complexity of their individual needs.
In addition to your weekly allowance, you’ll receive extra payments to mark birthdays, holidays, and religious celebrations. We also offer long service awards and a Refer a Friend bonus when someone you recommend becomes an approved TACT foster carer.
Below, you’ll find examples of the weekly Fostering Neath payments you could receive when a young person is placed in your care:

Meet The Area Manager
“I am immensely proud of being part of our highly experienced team of staff and foster carers, and to have met so many wonderful children and young people over the years. My team and I are passionate about achieving the best outcomes for our children and are a hundred percent behind our carers in enabling them to provide the best possible environment in which our children can flourish and emerge into health and happy young adults.”
Mike Anthony – TACT Area Manager Wales
What Our Foster Carers Say
“TACT’s training, and our Supervising Social Worker, have helped so much, especially when we were less experienced. The support and training is very good and helped us through some of the tougher challenges. I do believe we are part of a big TACT family.”
Joyce and John – TACT Foster Carers since 2010
Partnership With The Baxter Project

Since 2023, TACT has worked in partnership with The Baxter Project, an organisation providing animal-assisted early intervention programmes for young people. This collaboration has played a key role in supporting the young people in TACT’s care.
Their practitioner-led therapeutic sessions use trained dogs to help young people feel more at ease and express themselves more openly. By harnessing the natural bond between children and animals, this approach can be especially effective in situations where traditional wellbeing strategies may be less successful.
“The Baxter Project was introduced to us when ‘S’ was in High School and struggling very much with the work and school life generally. She really loved walking Baxter and enjoyed spending time with the Support Worker. We can only speak really highly of the Baxter Project.” Paul & Aly, TACT foster carers since 2014.
