“Fostering is not always easy, but it is always rewarding”

TACT Yorkshire

Being a foster carer was something I always wanted to do to make a difference and just try to help. After listening to TV ads and local authorities in desperate need for carers, I decided I was able to do this and make that difference to a child’s life.

After I enquired, TACT weren’t pushy and they gave me the time and space I needed for me to make sure fostering was right for me. I had the time to digest the information given by the staff I spoke with on the phone, who were so helpful – guiding me all the way, answering questions I had, helping me with paperwork. The first home visit with TACT was done by genuine people who cared about helping me to help young people. Nothing was ever too much for the staff.

No matter what TACT are always on hand. There is always somebody there to help, supporting with anything and everything, helping in organising something for the children you are looking after, and always being there for you by checking in to see if you’re alright.

My favourite thing about being a foster carer is simply spending time with the young people and listening to the aims they have. Seeing them happy and laughing always makes my day. My life was very quiet before the young person I’m caring for now came to live with me, but now the house has laughter again. My young person enjoys her own room and loves walking everyday and loves spending time with animals at the rescue centre. You build bonds with the children through these activities that can be everlasting.

She’s a beautiful young girl with a caring heart and although she was quiet and scared when she first arrived, she quickly settled in and hasn’t presented any challenges that are out of the normal for her age group. You build bonds with the children through these activities that can be everlasting.

My advice to anyone thing thinking about fostering would be to take the chance on a child. The rewards are fantastic – when you get to see the child develop and be happy it is such an amazing feeling, knowing you have helped change a child’s life for the better. Fostering is not always easy, but it’s always rewarding.
