TACT’s West Midlands team had a blast over the summer with our children, young people, and foster carers! We organised a variety of events which catered to different ages and interests and great fun was had by everyone!

We kicked things off at Cliff Lakes on 21st July. Cliff Lakes has a huge inflatable course on the edge of the lake, consisting of three sections for levels of ability. Seven of our young people attended this activity, and they were all competent swimmers. There were a lot of lifeguards present to ensure the safety of the children and they all wore wet suits and buoyancy aids.

Most of the children ended up in the third section of the course with more challenging activities which they thoroughly enjoyed. The session lasted for 90 minutes and we had lovely weather. There were friendships formed and everyone got along really well together, with some acts of kindness witnessed, helping and supporting each other.

After the session when everyone had changed into their dry clothes, we had lunch outside where the children chose their meals from the menu. A good day was had by all!

Next on the summer activity agenda was a painting activity in Walsall on 28th July, where the children copied a step-by-step painting from an artist. A silhouetted landscape of trees and animals was chosen. The children got to choose which animal they wanted to put in their painting, and we had a few interesting animals including Dinosaurs!

Eight of our young people attended, and the quality of the paintings produced was fantastic. The concentration and focus in the session was amazing, even for children who sometimes struggled with their concentration.

When we had finished our paintings, the artist gave the children sticky sparkles to add to their pictures. This went down really well and was a lovely way to finish the session. After the painting session we went to a Park and had a picnic for our lunch. The children enjoyed running around competing in races and playing tag, with the day ending with ice creams all round!

Our third activity was horse riding at Warren’s Hall Stables on 18th August. Six children took part in a range of activities, including grooming the horses, riding, and even enjoying a trot – which brought lots of smiles and a few giggles along the way!

The children were also involved in stable duties, helping to fill hay nets and muck out the horses. These hands-on activities gave them a greater understanding of how to care for horses and the responsibilities involved.

Being around horses can have a very positive impact on emotional wellbeing, and this was evident throughout the visit. The children appeared relaxed, engaged and confident during the sessions. All six children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and benefited from the opportunity to interact with the horses in a supportive and enjoyable environment.
