Fostering in Port Talbot

Children and young people in Port Talbot come into care for many different reasons, such as family breakdowns or illness. Unfortunately, the most common reason is experiencing neglect or abuse. TACT is recruiting foster carers in Port Talbot to provide these young people with the care and guidance they need to heal from past trauma.

You don’t need previous experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer in Port Talbot, as full training will be provided. To begin the application process, all you need is at least one spare bedroom, a caring and nurturing nature, and plenty of energy to give a child a safe and loving home. If this sounds like something you could do, you can join our Fostering Port Talbot Team!

Can I foster in Port Talbot?

No prior experience is needed to start fostering in Port Talbot. We offer thorough initial training, continuous learning opportunities, and round-the-clock support from day one.

To start your fostering journey, you’ll need to meet these basic requirements:

  • Be aged 21 or over (there’s no upper age limit)
  • Have at least one spare bedroom in your home
  • Be a full-time UK resident or have indefinite leave to remain
  • Have the time and flexibility to commit to fostering
  • Have good written and spoken English, as you’ll work closely with professionals and will keep written records about the children or young people in your care

Full Training

You don’t need any prior experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer.

We offer comprehensive training to help you feel confident and prepared to welcome children into your home, with sessions both online and in person.

During the assessment process, you’ll complete an introductory course called Skills to Foster. This short online course provides an overview of fostering and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Once approved as a foster carer with TACT, you’ll gain access to a broad programme of ongoing training to support your continued development. This helps you grow your skills and expand the care and support you can provide to children and young people in Port Talbot and the surrounding areas.

We also offer specialist courses that equip you with the knowledge and practical tools to care for children with specific needs or circumstances, ensuring you feel supported at every stage of your fostering journey.

24/7 Support

At TACT, we understand how vital it is for foster carers to have support whenever they need it. That’s why we continually invest in our services, ensuring every fostering family can access guidance and assistance 24/7.

Once you’re approved as a TACT foster carer, you’ll be paired with a dedicated Supervising Social Worker. With smaller caseloads, our social workers can offer more personalised and consistent support – helping you make a lasting and meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people.

This is what we provide:

  • Full 24/7 support. Your Supervising Social Worker will be your primary point of contact, while our out-of-hours service ensures support and guidance are always available whenever you need it.
  • Foster carer portal. An online hub offering convenient access to essential information, training, guidance, and resources to support you in your day-to-day fostering role.
  • Education service. A dedicated team focused on helping the children in your care access the best possible education and support.
  • Health service. Ongoing monitoring of the mental well-being of the children in your care.
  • Support groups. Local support groups in Port Talbot and nearby areas provide a space to meet other carers, share experiences, and create a supportive community for exchanging guidance and knowledge.
  • Support for young people. Our Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners offer extra support and organise activities and events for the children in your care in Port Talbot.
  • Supporting your own children. We understand the important role your own children play in the fostering journey. Our Children Who Foster events give them the opportunity to meet and connect with other young people from fostering families.
  • Peer support. Where available, experienced TACT foster carers offer peer-to-peer support, sharing practical guidance and advice with new carers.

Pay & Allowances

At TACT, we value foster carers as skilled professionals, and our fees and allowances are designed to reflect the important role they play in children’s lives.

In partnership with Neath Port Talbot Council, we receive funding to provide well-matched, nurturing homes for children and young people. This support enables us to deliver high-quality services while ensuring our foster carers have the financial security and wellbeing to fully focus on the children in their care.

Your fostering allowance will vary depending on factors such as the type of care you provide, the number and ages of the children placed with you, and the complexity of their individual needs.

In addition to your weekly allowance, you’ll receive extra payments to mark birthdays, holidays, and religious celebrations. We also offer long service awards and a Refer a Friend bonus when someone you recommend becomes an approved TACT foster carer.

Below, you’ll find examples of the weekly Fostering Port Talbot payments you could receive when a young person is placed in your care:

Fostering pay if caring for one child
Fostering Pay if caring for two children
Fostering Pay if caring for a child with additional needs
Fostering Pay if caring for a parent and their child

What Our Foster Carers Say

“Our TACT social worker goes above and beyond in giving us support and regularly keeps in touch. Added to that, our birth children, all of whom are now adults and have left home, fully support our choices.”

Partnership With The Baxter Project

Since 2023, TACT has partnered with The Baxter Project, an organisation delivering animal-assisted early intervention programmes for young people. This collaboration has been instrumental in supporting the young people in TACT’s care.

Their practitioner-led therapeutic sessions use trained dogs to help young people feel more relaxed and communicate more openly. By tapping into the natural bond between children and animals, this approach can be particularly effective in situations where traditional wellbeing methods may not work as well.

“The Baxter Project was introduced to us when ‘S’ was in High School and struggling very much with the work and school life generally.  She really loved walking Baxter and enjoyed spending time with the Support Worker. We can only speak really highly of the Baxter Project.” Paul & Aly, TACT foster carers since 2014.
