Connect Get-Aways: TJ’s Story

When I first became a member of Connect almost six years ago, I had not expected to jump 18,000 feet out of an aeroplane with them! I had also not expected to be the one SUGGESTING we jump out of a plane together!!!

But, these opportunities have been incredible and I love the support I’ve been given to try new things and get involved in co-creating our community together – like when I asked if we could do a sponsored skydive and it became a reality!!

As well as the skydive, I’ve also spent a weekend away with the Connect team and fellow members on a Get-Away in Scotland and been on another holiday in the Peaks as well as going go-karting! All the trips have been brilliant (and not all as terrifying as jumping out of a plane!) and I recommend the Get-Aways to everyone in our Connect community.

Expectation Vs Reality

When I first went on one of the Get-Aways, I felt nervous as I didn’t really know anyone and I didn’t know what to expect. I thought it would be boring and awkward… I was wrong!

Before the weekend, Nicola and Chloe (our Get-Away hosts and part of the Connect team – pictured) talked to every member to chat about the plans for the weekend, listen to any requests, answer any questions, and ask about the types of foods we’d like to eat while we were away. It really helped me to feel prepared and know what to expect.

All the weekends have been absolutely amazing and filled with fun and laughter – I got to meet some amazing people (and travel to the Get-Away by train, often with another member) and there was plenty of chilled time too.

We went go-karting (which was really fun) and also enjoyed some long, scenic walks (where we got lost, but found our way back!).

At mealtimes, there was a lovely variety of food (including some of my favourites that I had requested) and it was really nice to all sit down and eat together as a big group.

Memorable Experiences

I got so much more out of the Get-Away than just enjoying a weekend away.

There was a really lovely feeling of teamwork as everyone got involved with the practical side of sharing a house – some people helped to cook the meals (I picked up some cooking skills!) and I helped with cleaning up afterwards.

Getting lost on our long walk gave me confidence in finding a solution when things don’t go to plan – Chloe taught me how to read a map and I definitely came away with some new navigation skills!

I’m really thankful for the opportunities I’ve had through my Connect membership and will remember these experiences for years to come.

The Connect Team are so supportive and, despite it pushing us out of our comfort zones,  skydiving with them is the best thing I have ever done!
