World Social Work Day: Kayleigh’s Story

The 18th March marks World Social Work Day 2025, a time where we acknowledge and celebrate a profession that cares and advocates for individuals, families and communities.

Initialised by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) in 2007, World Social Work Day features a different theme or focus each year. The theme for 2025 is Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing. According to the IFSW website, this theme is centred around ‘the importance of caring and respecting across generations to build strong societies, sustain the environment, and share wisdom for a better future.’

IFSW President, Joachim Mumba, has stated: “This theme highlights the critical role of intergenerational care, respect, and collaboration in creating resilient communities and sustainable environments. It underscores the social work profession’s dedication to building connections that value the wisdom of our elders while empowering younger generations to tackle today’s challenges and envision a better future. Together, we can build a world where compassion and solidarity lay the groundwork for lasting well-being for everyone. As an African proverb says, ‘If you light a lamp for someone, it will also brighten your own path’. Our collective efforts to uplift one another ultimately illuminate the way forward for all.”

Here at TACT, we’re hosting a drop-in session for our fantastic team of social workers. It will be a time to reflect on the great practices and achievements of our team, along with the sharing of inspiring stories. The session has been organised by our Innovation & Continuous Improvement Manager, Kayleigh.

We talked to Kayleigh, who has worked as a social worker for 18 years, about what inspired her to enter the profession, and what she is most proud of with regards to her work with young people.
