Fostering in swansea

Fostering in Swansea may be something you have been considering for a while, or you may be new to the idea. Fostering can change young people’s lives – so no matter where you are on your journey, we have all the information you need.

There are many children in Swansea and surrounding areas that cannot be looked after by their own family. Reasons for this could be an illness, or family breakdowns. However in most cases, it is due to some form of neglect or abuse. TACT are recruiting foster carers in Swansea to provide nurturing care and support for these children. You could join our Fostering Swansea team!

Can I foster in Swansea?

No prior experience is required to start fostering in Swansea. We offer thorough initial training, continuous learning opportunities, and round-the-clock support from day one.

To start your fostering journey, you’ll need to meet these basic requirements:

  • Be aged 21 or over (there’s no upper age limit)
  • Have at least one spare bedroom in your home
  • Be a full-time UK resident or have indefinite leave to remain
  • Have the time and flexibility to commit to fostering
  • Have good written and spoken English, as you’ll work closely with professionals and will keep written records about the children or young people in your care

Full Training

You don’t need prior experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer.

We offer comprehensive training to help you feel confident and ready to welcome children into your home, with sessions both online and in person.

During the assessment process, you’ll complete an introductory course called Skills to Foster. This short online course provides an overview of fostering and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Once you’re approved as a foster carer with TACT, you’ll have access to a broad programme of ongoing training to support your continued development. This helps you enhance your skills and extend the care and support you can provide to children and young people in Swansea and the surrounding areas.

We also provide specialist courses that equip you with the knowledge and practical tools to care for children with specific needs or circumstances, ensuring you feel supported every step of your fostering journey.

24/7 Support

At TACT, we understand how vital it is for foster carers to have support whenever they need it. That’s why we continually invest in our support services, ensuring every fostering family can access guidance and assistance 24/7.

Once you’re approved as a TACT foster carer, you’ll be paired with a dedicated Supervising Social Worker. With smaller caseloads, our social workers can offer personalised and consistent support—helping you make a lasting and meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people.

This is what we provide:

  • Full 24/7 support. Your Supervising Social Worker will serve as your primary point of contact. Plus, our out-of-hours service ensures help and guidance are always available whenever you need them.
  • Foster carer portal. An online hub offering convenient access to key information, training, guidance, and resources to support you in your everyday fostering responsibilities.
  • Education service. A specialised team committed to ensuring the children in your care receive the highest quality education and support.
  • Health service. Ongoing monitoring of the mental well-being of the children in your care.
  • Support groups. Local support groups in Swansea and nearby areas provide a space to meet other carers, share experiences, and create a supportive community for exchanging knowledge and advice.
  • Support for young people. Our Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners offer extra support and organise activities and events for the children in your care in Swansea.
  • Supporting your own children. We understand the important role your own children play in the fostering journey. Our Children Who Foster events give them the opportunity to meet and connect with other young people from fostering families.
  • Peer support. Where available, experienced TACT foster carers offer peer-to-peer support, sharing practical guidance and advice with new carers.

Pay & Allowances

At TACT, we value foster carers as skilled professionals, and our fees and allowances are designed to reflect the crucial role they play in children’s lives.

Working in partnership with Swansea Council, we receive funding to provide well-matched, nurturing homes for children and young people. This support enables us to deliver high-quality services while ensuring our foster carers have the financial stability and wellbeing to fully focus on the children in their care.

Your fostering allowance will vary depending on factors such as the type of care you provide, the number and ages of the children placed with you, and the complexity of their individual needs.

In addition to your weekly allowance, you’ll receive extra payments to mark birthdays, holidays, and religious celebrations. We also offer long service awards and a Refer a Friend bonus when someone you recommend becomes an approved TACT foster carer.

Below, you’ll find examples of the weekly Fostering Swansea payments you could receive when a young person is placed in your care:

Fostering pay if caring for one child
Fostering Pay if caring for two children
Fostering Pay if caring for a child with additional needs
Fostering Pay if caring for a parent and their child

Meet The Area Manager

“I am immensely proud of being part of our highly experienced team of staff and foster carers, and to have met so many wonderful children and young people over the years. My team and I are passionate about achieving the best outcomes for our children and are a hundred percent behind our carers in enabling them to provide the best possible environment in which our children can flourish and emerge into health and happy young adults.”

What Our Foster Carers Say

“TACT have been an incredibly helpful and positive influence throughout our fostering journey. Even though we’ve been fostering for 17 years, the training is always worth our time and we learn something new at every event, which benefits us and the young people we care for greatly. We also can’t fault the support provided by TACT – we get regular calls, visits and out of hours support if necessary. It’s so comforting to know that there is always someone at the end of the phone 24/7 to assist us with any problems we may encounter.”

Partnership With The Baxter Project

Since 2023, TACT has partnered with The Baxter Project, an organisation that delivers animal-assisted early intervention programmes for young people. This collaboration has made a significant difference in supporting the young people in TACT’s care.

Their practitioner-led therapeutic sessions use trained dogs to help young people feel more comfortable and express themselves more openly. By tapping into the natural bond between children and animals, this approach can be particularly effective in situations where traditional wellbeing methods may be less successful.

“The Baxter Project was introduced to us when ‘S’ was in High School and struggling very much with the work and school life generally.  She really loved walking Baxter and enjoyed spending time with the Support Worker. We can only speak really highly of the Baxter Project.” Paul & Aly, TACT foster carers since 2014.
