Fostering in Cardiff

You could change children’s lives by becoming a foster carer in Cardiff.

There are many children who cannot be looked after by their own family. This could be for a variety of reasons such as illness or family breakdowns. Unfortunately, in most cases, it is due to some form of abuse or neglect. TACT are recruiting foster carers in Cardiff to provide care and support to these children. You could join our Fostering Cardiff team!

You may have been considering fostering for a while, or you may be looking to transfer from your current agency or local authority. Maybe you are completely new to the idea of fostering. No matter where you are on your journey, we have all the information you need to start making a difference to young people’s lives.

Can I foster in Cardiff?

You don’t need any previous experience to start fostering in Cardiff – full training and ongoing support are provided.

To begin your fostering journey, you’ll need to meet the following initial criteria:

  • Be over 21 years old (there’s no upper age limit)
  • Have at least one spare bedroom
  • Be a full-time resident in the UK or have indefinite leave to remain
  • Have the time and flexibility to dedicate yourself to fostering
  • Have good written and spoken English, as you’ll work with professionals and keep written records about the children or young people in your care

Full Training

You don’t need any previous experience or formal training to become a foster carer.

We’ll provide you with comprehensive training so you feel confident and fully prepared to welcome children into your home. We provide our training both online and in person.

As part of the assessment process, you’ll take part in an introductory course called Skills to Foster. This short online course offers an overview of fostering and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Once you’re approved as a foster carer with TACT, you’ll gain access to an extensive ongoing training programme. This will help you continue to develop your skills, enabling you to support even more children and young people across Cardiff and the surrounding area.

We also offer specialist training to help you care for children with particular needs or circumstances, ensuring you feel supported every step of the way.

24/7 Support

At TACT, we know that 24/7 support is essential to provide our foster carers with help and support whenever they require it. That’s why we reinvest in the support services we offer to our fostering families – ensuring foster carers have access to the help and guidance they need.

When you’re approved as a TACT foster carer, you’ll be matched with a dedicated Supervising Social Worker. Because our social workers manage smaller caseloads, they’re able to provide you with personalised, consistent support – helping you make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of children and young people.

This is what we provide:

  • Full 24/7 support. Your Supervising Social Worker will be your primary point of contact. Additionally, our out-of-hours service ensures help and advice is always available whenever you need it.
  • Foster carer portal. An online hub offering quick access to essential information, training, advice, and resources to support your daily fostering responsibilities.
  • Education service. A specialised team dedicated to ensuring the children in your care receive the best educational opportunities and guidance.
  • Health service. Ongoing monitoring of the physical and mental well-being of the children in your care to ensure their overall health is supported.
  • Support groups. Local support groups in Cardiff and nearby areas provide a space to connect with fellow carers – to share experiences and build a knowledge sharing community.
  • Support for young people. Our Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners offer additional support, along with activities and events for the children in your care in Cardiff.
  • Supporting your own children. We recognise the important role your own children play in the fostering journey. Through our Children Who Foster events, they can connect with other young people who contribute to fostering.
  • Peer support. Where available, experienced TACT foster carers offer peer-to-peer guidance, providing practical advice for new carers.

Pay & Allowances

At TACT, we recognise that foster carers are skilled professionals who play a vital role in transforming children’s lives. Our fees and allowances are designed to reflect this.

In partnership with Cardiff Council, we receive funding to provide carefully matched fostering homes to children and young people. This funding allows us to deliver high quality services and provide our foster carers with the financial wellbeing to fully dedicate their time and skills to the young people in their care

Your fostering allowance will depend on several factors, including the type of care you provide, the number and ages of the children placed with you, and the complexity of their needs.

In addition to your weekly allowance, you’ll receive extra payments to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and religious festivals. We also offer long service awards and a Refer a Friend bonus if someone you recommend becomes an approved TACT foster carer.

Below, you’ll find examples of the weekly Fostering Cardiff payments you could receive when a young person is placed in your care:

Fostering pay if caring for one child
Fostering Pay if caring for two children
Fostering Pay if caring for a child with additional needs
Fostering Pay if caring for a parent and their child

What Our Foster Carers Say

“We chose to foster with TACT because we had heard through another foster carer how good the charity was.  We were welcomed by TACT with open arms and we have a fantastic working relationship with them. We have great support from our Social Worker who is always on the end of the phone and visits regularly.”

Partnership With The Baxter Project

Since 2023, TACT has worked alongside The Baxter Project, an organisation focused on offering animal-assisted early intervention programmes for young people. Throughout this partnership, The Baxter Project has played a crucial role in supporting TACT’s young people, making a significant difference in their lives.

The organisation conducts practitioner-led therapeutic sessions using trained dogs to help lower defences and improve communication in young people. By tapping into the natural bond between children and animals, this approach often proves effective in situations where conventional wellbeing strategies may not.

“The Baxter Project was introduced to us when ‘S’ was in High School and struggling very much with the work and school life generally.  She really loved walking Baxter and enjoyed spending time with the Support Worker. We can only speak really highly of the Baxter Project.” Paul & Aly, TACT foster carers since 2014.
