Fostering in Brent

Fostering in Brent means changing the lives of children in your local area, by providing them with a stable, safe and caring home. Somewhere they can recover from any trauma they may have experienced. Watching children and young people in your care find their feet and regain their confidence at school or college, or just generally in their everyday lives, is so rewarding. TACT are recruiting foster carers in Brent in order to provide care and guidance for these vulnerable young people. If this sounds like something YOU could do, you could join our Fostering Brent team!

Can I foster in Brent?

You don’t need any previous experience to start fostering in Brent. To proceed with an application, you would need to meet this initial criteria:

  • To be over 21 years old (there is no upper age limit)
  • To have at least one spare bedroom
  • To be a full-time resident in the UK or have indefinite leave to remain

You would also need the time and flexibility to dedicate yourself to fostering. Good written and spoken English is essential, as you would be required to work with other professionals, and provide written records detailing the progress of any young people in your care.

Full Training

No prior experience or training is necessary to become a foster carer.

We provide thorough training to ensure you feel confident and well-prepared to care for children in your home. Training options are available both online and in-person.

As part of the foster carer assessment process, you will complete an initial training course called Skills to Foster. Delivered online, this short course introduces you to fostering and gives you the chance to ask any questions you may have.

Once you are approved as a foster carer with TACT, you will have access to a comprehensive training program designed to develop your skills further, enabling you to care for more children and young people in the Brent area.

Additionally, we provide specialised training to help you support children with specific needs or requirements.

24/7 Support

At TACT, we understand that 24/7 support is key to transforming children’s lives. That’s why we reinvest any surplus funds into enhancing the services we provide to our fostering families, ensuring you have the assistance you need, whenever you need it.

Once you become an approved TACT foster carer, you will be assigned a dedicated Supervising Social Worker. With manageable caseloads, our social workers can focus on giving you the personalised support and guidance you need to make a lasting difference.

This is what we provide:

  • Full 24/7 support. Your Supervising Social Worker will be your primary point of contact. Additionally, our out-of-hours service ensures help and advice is always available whenever you need it.
  • Foster carer portal. An online hub offering quick access to essential information, training, advice, and resources to support your daily fostering responsibilities.
  • Education service. A specialised team dedicated to ensuring the children in your care receive the best educational opportunities and guidance.
  • Health service. Ongoing monitoring of the physical and mental well-being of the children in your care to ensure their overall health is supported.
  • Support groups. Local support groups in Brent and nearby areas provide a space to connect with fellow carers – to share experiences and build a knowledge sharing community.
  • Support for young people. Our Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners offer additional support, along with activities and events for the children in your care in Brent.
  • Supporting your own children. We recognise the important role your own children play in the fostering journey. Through our Children Who Foster events, they can connect with other young people who contribute to fostering.
  • Peer support. Where available, experienced TACT foster carers offer peer-to-peer guidance, providing practical advice for new carers.

Pay & Allowances

Foster carers are skilled professionals, and our fees and allowances are designed to recognise the vital role they play in children’s lives.

In partnership with Brent Council, we receive funding to support the care of children and young people in the area. This funding enables us to provide high-quality services and support to our dedicated team of foster carers. The fostering allowance you receive will vary based on factors such as the type of care you provide, the number and ages of the children in your care, and the complexity of their needs.

There are also payments for children’s birthdaysholidays and religious festivals. We also pay long service awards and a Refer a Friend fee (if you recommend someone who then goes on to be an approved foster carer with us).

Below, you can find examples of the weekly Fostering Brent payments you could receive when a young person is placed in your care:

Rated ‘Good’ By Ofsted

Following an inspection in March 2022, Ofsted have announced that TACT London, Essex and Hertfordshire has been rated ‘Good’ for its work with foster carers and looked after children.

“Children thrive and make good progress from their starting points. This is because they share positive and trusting relationships with their foster carers. These positive relationships help children to feel safe and secure.” – Ofsted 2022

What Our Foster Carers Say

“The support, training and advice we get from TACT is second to none and there are no words to describe the level of support we get for our SSW and the TACT team. My wife and I are a same sex couple and have felt that we have always been treated with the same respect as other foster carers. We have friends who foster through other agencies, and they always comment on how lucky we are because of how supported we feel.”
