Fostering in Wrexham

Children and young people in Wrexham come into care for lots of different reasons. It could be due to family breakdowns, or an illness. However, the main reason why young people enter the care system is because of some form of neglect or even abuse. TACT are recruiting foster carers in Wrexham in order to provide these young people with care and guidance – to help them recover from any previous trauma they may have experienced.

To become a foster carer in Wrexham, you don’t need any previous experience or qualifications as full training will be provided. To start the application process, you just need at least one spare bedroom in your home, a caring and nurturing character – and lots of energy to provide a child with a secure and loving home. If this sounds like something that you could do, you could join our Fostering Wrexham Team!

Can I foster in Wrexham?

You don’t need any previous experience to begin fostering in Wrexham. We provide comprehensive initial training, ongoing learning opportunities, and 24/7 support from your very first day.

To start your fostering journey, you’ll need to meet these basic requirements:

  • Be aged 21 or over (there’s no upper age limit)
  • Have at least one spare bedroom in your home
  • Be a full-time UK resident or have indefinite leave to remain
  • Have the time and flexibility to commit to fostering
  • Have good written and spoken English, as you’ll work closely with professionals and will keep written records about the children or young people in your care

Full Training

You don’t need any previous experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer.

We provide comprehensive training to help you feel confident and prepared to welcome children into your home, with learning both online and in person.

As part of the assessment process, you’ll complete an introductory course called Skills to Foster. This short online course gives an overview of fostering and offers the chance to ask any questions you may have.

Once approved as a foster carer with TACT, you’ll have access to a wide-ranging programme of ongoing training to support your continued development. This helps you build your skills and expand the care and support you can offer to children and young people in Wrexham and the surrounding areas.

We also offer specialist courses designed to provide the knowledge and practical tools needed to care for children with particular needs or circumstances, ensuring you feel supported at every stage of your fostering journey.

24/7 Support

At TACT, we know how important it is for foster carers to have support whenever they need it. That’s why we continually invest in our services, ensuring every fostering family has access to guidance and assistance around the clock.

Once you’re approved as a TACT foster carer, you’ll be assigned a dedicated Supervising Social Worker. Because our social workers manage smaller caseloads, they can provide personalised and consistent support – helping you make a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of children and young people.

This is what we provide:

  • Full 24/7 support. Your Supervising Social Worker will be your main point of contact, and our out-of-hours service ensures support and guidance are available whenever you need them.
  • Foster carer portal. An online hub providing easy access to essential information, training, guidance, and resources to support you in your daily fostering role.
  • Education service. A specialised team committed to ensuring the children in your care receive the highest quality education and support.
  • Health service. Ongoing monitoring of the mental well-being of the children in your care.
  • Support groups. Local support groups in Wrexham and surrounding areas offer a space to connect with other carers, share experiences, and build a supportive community for exchanging advice and knowledge.
  • Support for young people. Our Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners provide additional support and arrange activities and events for the children in your care in Wrexham.
  • Supporting your own children. We recognise the important role your own children have in the fostering journey. Our Children Who Foster events allow them to meet and connect with other young people from fostering families.
  • Peer support. Where available, experienced TACT foster carers provide peer-to-peer support, offering practical advice and guidance to new carers.

Pay & Allowances

At TACT, we recognise foster carers as skilled professionals, and our fees and allowances are structured to reflect the vital role they play in children’s lives.

In partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, we receive funding to provide well-matched, nurturing homes for children and young people. This support allows us to deliver high-quality services while ensuring our foster carers have the financial security and wellbeing to focus fully on the children in their care.

Your fostering allowance will depend on factors such as the type of care you provide, the number and ages of the children placed with you, and the complexity of their individual needs.

In addition to your weekly allowance, you’ll receive extra payments to mark birthdays, holidays, and religious celebrations. We also offer long service awards and a Refer a Friend bonus when someone you recommend becomes an approved TACT foster carer.

Below, you’ll find examples of the weekly Fostering Wrexham payments you could receive when a young person is placed in your care:

Fostering pay if caring for one child
Fostering Pay if caring for two children
Fostering Pay if caring for a child with additional needs
Fostering Pay if caring for a parent and their child

What Our Foster Carers Say

“All in all, we have cared for sixty-three young people in twenty-two years. The support we receive from TACT is excellent, and always available. Our TACT social worker has been with us for many years and is always supportive. In my dealings with management, I have always been treated with respect and felt listened too.”

Partnership With The Baxter Project

Since 2023, TACT has worked in partnership with The Baxter Project, an organisation providing animal-assisted early intervention programmes for young people. This collaboration has played a key role in supporting the young people in TACT’s care.

Their practitioner-led therapeutic sessions use trained dogs to help young people feel at ease and communicate more freely. By harnessing the natural connection between children and animals, this approach can be especially effective in situations where traditional wellbeing strategies may not be as successful.

“The Baxter Project was introduced to us when ‘S’ was in High School and struggling very much with the work and school life generally.  She really loved walking Baxter and enjoyed spending time with the Support Worker. We can only speak really highly of the Baxter Project.” Paul & Aly, TACT foster carers since 2014.
