Fostering In Newport

Foster carers make a difference to the lives of children every day. Young people enter care for numerous reasons, including long-term illness or family breakdowns. Regrettably, neglect or abuse is often the cause. TACT is actively seeking foster carers to offer these children the necessary care and support. You could join our Fostering Newport Team.

Whether you have been considering fostering for a while, or whether you are new to the idea – we have all the information you need to start making a difference to young people’s lives.

Can I foster in Newport?

You don’t need previous experience to begin fostering in Newport. We provide comprehensive initial training, ongoing learning opportunities, and 24/7 support from the very first day.

To start your fostering journey, you’ll need to meet these basic requirements:

  • Be aged 21 or over (there’s no upper age limit)
  • Have at least one spare bedroom in your home
  • Be a full-time UK resident or have indefinite leave to remain
  • Have the time and flexibility to commit to fostering
  • Have good written and spoken English, as you’ll work closely with professionals and will keep written records about the children or young people in your care

Full Training

You don’t need previous experience or formal qualifications to become a foster carer.

We provide comprehensive training to help you feel confident and prepared to welcome children into your home. Training is provided both online and in person.

As part of the assessment process, you’ll complete an introductory course called Skills to Foster. This short online course gives you an overview of what fostering involves and provides the chance to ask any questions you may have.

Once approved as a foster carer with TACT, you’ll gain access to a wide range of ongoing training designed to support your continued development. This helps you build your skills and expand the support you can offer to children and young people in Newport and the surrounding areas.

We also offer specialist courses that provide the knowledge and practical tools needed to care for children with particular needs or circumstances, ensuring you feel supported at every stage of your fostering journey.

24/7 Support

At TACT, we know how important it is for foster carers to have support whenever they need it. That’s why we continually reinvest in our support services, ensuring every fostering family has access to guidance and assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Once you’re approved as a TACT foster carer, you’ll be supported by a dedicated Supervising Social Worker. Because our social workers work with smaller caseloads, they’re able to provide more personalised and consistent support – helping you make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of children and young people.

This is what we provide:

  • Full 24/7 support. Your Supervising Social Worker will be your main point of contact. In addition, our out-of-hours service means support and advice are always available whenever you need them.
  • Foster carer portal. An online hub providing easy access to essential information, training, guidance, and resources to support you in your day-to-day fostering role.
  • Education service. A dedicated team focused on helping the children in your care access the best possible education and support.
  • Health service. Ongoing monitoring of the mental well-being of the children in your care.
  • Support groups. Local support groups in Newport and surrounding areas offer a space to connect with other carers, share experiences, and build a supportive community where knowledge and advice can be exchanged.
  • Support for young people. Our Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners provide additional support, as well as organising activities and events for the children in your care in Newport.
  • Supporting your own children. We recognise the important role your own children play in the fostering journey. Through our Children Who Foster events, they can meet and connect with other young people who are also part of a fostering family.
  • Peer support. Where available, experienced TACT foster carers provide peer-to-peer support, sharing practical advice and guidance with new carers.

Pay & Allowances

At TACT, we recognise foster carers as skilled professionals, and our fees and allowances are structured to reflect the vital role they play in children’s lives.

In partnership with Newport City Council, we receive funding to provide well-matched, nurturing homes for children and young people. This support allows us to deliver high-quality services while ensuring our foster carers have the financial security and wellbeing needed to focus fully on the children in their care.

Your fostering allowance will depend on factors such as the type of care you provide, the number and ages of the children placed with you, and the complexity of their individual needs.

In addition to your weekly allowance, you’ll receive extra payments to mark birthdays, holidays, and religious celebrations. We also offer long service awards and a Refer a Friend bonus when someone you recommend becomes an approved TACT foster carer.

Below, you’ll find examples of the weekly Fostering Newport payments you could receive when a young person is placed in your care:

Fostering pay if caring for one child
Fostering Pay if caring for two children
Fostering Pay if caring for a child with additional needs
Fostering Pay if caring for a parent and their child

Meet The Area Manager

“I am immensely proud of being part of our highly experienced team of staff and foster carers, and to have met so many wonderful children and young people over the years. My team and I are passionate about achieving the best outcomes for our children and are a hundred percent behind our carers in enabling them to provide the best possible environment in which our children can flourish and emerge into health and happy young adults.”

What Our Foster Carers Say

“I have been fostering with my wife Anita for four years. It is something we have always wanted to do, so after our youngest daughter got married and moved out we had a spare room and a loving home to offer. We decided to foster through TACT because of the charity’s values and commitment to helping children in need.”

Partnership With The Baxter Project

Since 2023, TACT has partnered with The Baxter Project, an organisation dedicated to providing animal-assisted early intervention programmes for young people. Through this collaboration, The Baxter Project has made a meaningful impact in supporting TACT’s young people.

Their practitioner-led therapeutic sessions use trained dogs to help young people feel more at ease and communicate more openly. By harnessing the natural connection between children and animals, this approach can be especially effective in situations where traditional wellbeing strategies may be less successful.

“The Baxter Project was introduced to us when ‘S’ was in High School and struggling very much with the work and school life generally.  She really loved walking Baxter and enjoyed spending time with the Support Worker. We can only speak really highly of the Baxter Project.” Paul & Aly, TACT foster carers since 2014.
